Course Description

Elementary first Aid course is a fundamental course to build first aid skills to enable participants to respond to a life-threatening situation confidently in real life.

Course Objectives

  • Administering elementary first aid on board ship  
  • Meeting the  minimum  standard  of  competence  in elementary first aid,
  • Being ompetent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of the person in charge of medical care

Course Details/Schedule

Day 1

  • Introduction to Elementary First Aid - Knowledge, understanding and proficiency in basic first aid
  • An assessment of any threats to the person delivering first aid.
  • Basic understanding of human anatomy.
  • How to carry out a first assessment of the needs of a casualty
  • Taking immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency
  • Assessing the needs of the casualty and threats to self safety  

Day 2

  • Emergency Treatment 
  • Understanding the immediate measures to be taken in case of an emergency     
  • Positioning a casualty
  • Applying resuscitation techniques
  • Controlling bleeding

Day 3

  • Shock and Burns 
  • What to do for immediate treatment of a burn or electric shock
  • An understanding of the effects of shock and the appropriate treatmet
  • Basic shock management
  • Applying appropriate measures in event of burns and scalds
  • The rescue and transport of a casualty

Day 4

  • Rescue, Transport and Emergency Kit Materials 
  • Improvising bandages and using your emergency kit
  • How to apply different kinds of bandage
  • How to prepare a casualty for medical evacuation

Day 5

  • Other Topics

  • Bandaging: Improvises bandages by means available
  • Uses bandaging materials in the emergency kit
  • Demonstrates the correct use of bandages
  • Enclosed spaces: 
  • Recognizes the dangers when making entry
  • States that the internal atmosphere may contain dangerous gases or lack sufficient oxygen 
  • Takes all necessary and appropriate precautions
