Course Description

The goal of this course is to understand the role and responsibilities of the close protection operative and to understand the skills required to create and maintain a secure environment. This course will provide the necessary information to assist participants in close protection, threat and risk assessment, operational planning and team work which can protect their lives and the lives of citizens for whom they are responsible.  

Course Objectives

  • Explaining the purpose of close protection
  • Explaining the different roles and responsibilities within a close protection team
  • Identifying who is likely to require close protection services
  • Explaining the range of equipment available to the close protection operative
  • Explaining the tasks a close protection operative may undertake whilst working alone
  • Explaining the difference between a successful and unsuccessful close protection task
  • Describing a range of basic anti-surveillance techniques
  • Explaining the purpose of counter-surveillance
  • Explaining the importance of threat and risk assessment in operational planning
  • Developing and implement an operational plan

Course Details/Schedule

Day 1

  • Roles and Responsibilities of the Close Protection Operative
  • Assess  threats, vulnerabilities and risks to principals
  • Plan and prepare to minimize threats, vulnerabilities and risks to principals
  • Establish and maintain secure environments
  • Maintain the safety and security of principals whilst on foot and vehicle
  • Use physical intervention to support close protection

Day 2

  • Threat and Risk Assessment
  • Assess threats, vulnerabilities and risks to principals
  • Plan and prepare to minimize threats, vulnerabilities and risks to principals
  • Communicate effectively with others

Day 3

  • Surveillance Awareness and Incident Management
  • Plan and prepare to minimize threats, vulnerabilities and risk to principals
  • Establish and maintain secure environments
  • Maintain the safety and security of principals whilst on foot
  • Maintain the safety and security of principals whilst mobile

Day 4

  • Operational Planning/Foot Drills and Journey Management
  • Purpose of operational planning 
  • Importance of threat and risk assessment in operational planning
  • Importance of time and resource management
  • The relevant agencies that may need to be contacted in the course of operational planning
  • Implementing an operational plan

Day 5

  • Interpersonal Skills and Team Work
  • The definition of interpersonal skills
