Course Description
One of the main challenges in Air Quality Management (AQM) is to have timely and appropriate access to air quality data which are relevant and of known quality. The course provides the insight into the complexity of air pollution management and source abatement. In order to improve and manage air pollution, knowledge in several areas is necessary including the fate of air pollutants, chemical conversions, and their effects on health and welfare, meteorology, measurement of pollutant levels and their prediction using modeling tools, as well as using least cost analysis techniques to predict the costs of air quality improvement policies. Although air quality management is often understood as being concerned with local air quality, global climate change (global warming) with its profound impact on a global as well as local level needs to manage the quality of air.
Course Objectives
- Identifying major types of air quality problems based upon types of pollutants, chemical transformations, and temporal and spatial scales
- Being familiar with the major common air pollutants and the air quality management approaches
- Identifying and evaluating control strategies for mitigating atmospheric air pollution problems.
- Understanding the various techniques that can be adopted for managing air pollution related problems.
- Understanding a systems approach to apply scientific and technical information to inform policy decisions affecting management of air quality.
